Protective Stadium’s Partners

HOW IT ALL CAME TOGETHER

It takes partners, great partners, to make projects as ambitious as Protective Stadium a reality. Beginning with a conversation between the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center Authority and the University of Alabama Birmingham shortly after the school’s football program was re-instated in 2015, momentum began to solidify around the idea of constructing a new multi-purpose stadium on property previously acquired at the BJCC.

Discussions picked up momentum with support from Jefferson County, the City of Birmingham, the Jefferson County Legislative Delegation, and corporate community support. Shortly thereafter, the BJCC Board of Directors pushed the project forward by retaining the world-renown Kansas City architectural firm Populous to begin developing concepts for a stadium on the new site at the BJCC.

With the financing model solidified in late 2018, site work started in 2019. Construction began on the stadium in January of 2020 after construction firm Brasfield & Gorrie were awarded the contract to construct the stadium following a public competitive bidding process.

Protective Stadium officially opened October 2, 2021 when UAB Football faced off against Liberty.

Protective Stadium’s Founding Partners

We’d also like to thank Alabama Power, Regions Bank, Vulcan Materials, and Legacy Credit Union. These prominent members of the Birmingham corporate community committed to being a part of the public-private partnership fundamental to making Protective Stadium a reality in the early days of the project. Without their support, the path toward solidifying the funding to make Protective Stadium a reality would have taken significantly longer to complete.

Regions

Regions Bank is centered upon the idea of breaking down the walls between everyday citizens and their financial goals. Recent initiatives have also included commitments to fight racial injustice.

Legacy

At Legacy, our mission is simple: We Craft Financial Solutions. From your first savings account to your forever home, we can help you Craft Your Legacy.

Vulcan Materials

Vulcan Materials’ mission is to provide construction materials that go beyond the standard of living in any fully developed society. In doing so, Vulcan Materials complies with all regulations and upholds an ethical practice that ensures quality products built to last.

Alabama Power

Alabama Power is committed to providing Alabama with affordable energy while protecting its beauty and natural resources. Their initiatives include green energy and community programs.

A Special Thanks

We also want to make a special thanks to our corporate community for the suite lease program headed by the UAB Athletic Foundation. Pre-leasing of over 20 stadium suites allowed suite revenues to be leveraged into the financing of the stadium.

And of course…

We welcome the University of Alabama at Birmingham for entrusting the BJCC and Protective Stadium to be their new home for 20 years. With the full support of UAB students, fans, partners and the greater Birmingham community, Protective Stadium is sure to be one of, if not the best home game environments in all of Conference USA. Go Blazers!

We’d like to thank each and every one of our partners.
